While some thrillers may ratchet tension or stir unease through atmosphere or fast-moving incidents, it was the story coming alive through our main character-Lowen-that allowed us as readers to feel unnerved, to doubt, to suspect. While yes, the direction and tone of the narrative is decisively different, the story comes alive through the dialogue and the storytelling itself, which to me is where she sets herself apart and where her recognizable style shines through.
The book is a stylistic departure for Hoover, but also so unmistakably hers.
